Did you know?
Although Glasgow is well-known around the world for being a musical mecca, Bellshill is rarely mentioned for its contribution to it. Sheena Easton is the first of a long list of singers and bands that share Bellshill as their birthplace. The Grammy Award winner and singer of James Bond theme ‘For your eyes only’ was born in this town in 1959. Eight years later, Sharleen Spiteri came into this world at the former Bellshill Maternity Hospital. Bellshill has also given the underground music scene bands like The Soup Dragons, MBX Bandits, Mogwai and Teenage Fanclub, which gained the town its appearance on the documentary ‘Teenage Superstars’. More recently, De Rosa has continued Bellshill’s rock sound. On the other hand, electronic music has been represented by acclaimed DJ John Peel. Perhaps due to all this musical talent stemming from the town, The Vaselines have been repeatedly –and mistakenly- reported to be from Bellshill, too. But they are not.
